Cavaillon to Saint-Gilles

This section was remarkable for the number of rivers and canals that we crossed. In earlier times this would have been a major barrier for travellers, but we only had to make a few small detours.

Having crossed the slow, sandy Durance river, we followed the rocky chain of the Alpilles to St-Rémy-de-Provence, then to Fontvieille. After that we came to the edge of the Camargue, which was covered with a network of canals, some of them without bridges, and eventually reached the majestic Rhône at Arles.

From here we set off across the Camargue proper, a flat land of marshes, lakes and canals, until we crossed the Petit Rhône (not as small as it sounds), followed by the Rhône-Sète canal, and arrived at St-Gilles.
