Confolens to Lussac-les-Châteaux

As we continued on our placid way downstream (mostly on the GR48), the walking was easy, except for one patch of murderous blackberry canes. Sometimes we were beside the river and sometimes higher up amongst gently rolling hills, while the last day was on an abandoned railway line.

The towns where we camped had the usual fascinating threads of history woven into the modern fabric – collapsing castles, old bridges, barrages and all the paraphernalia of the former railway. Once again the weather was cool and erratic, with patches of sun between storms .

On the first two mornings we took the precaution of having a proper breakfast before setting off, but on the third day we over-confidently assumed that we could have it along the way and ended up walking the whole 23 km in a state of increasing starvation. It was a lesson for us. As compensation, we stayed in a hotel that night.
