Walking in France: Passing the Château de Chaumont
Passing the Château de Chaumont

For people visiting France with a car, the normal thing is to make little expeditions every day to look at particular sights, such as churches, chateaux, museums or Plus Beaux Villages. It is different for the long-distance walker, for whom the journey itself is the most important consideration.

While we usually glance inside the local church, and visit other monuments if they happen to be open, we never worry about missing out on sights. The main thing in our mind is the road ahead, and anyway, the best bit of many old buildings is the outside, which we admire as we go past.
