This chain of low mountains divides the waters that flow west towards the Altantic from those that flow south to the Rhône and the Mediterranean.
The walk described here (part of a longer walk that we did in 2011) starts on the southern edge of Burgundy, at Matour, and goes south as far as Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise, although the mountains continue beyond there to Saint-Étienne.
We did actually continue on from St-Symphorien-sur-Coise to St-Étienne, but it was rather a horror day so we do not include it here.
