We were now on the Loire, which a this late stage of its life was enormously wide and shallow, dotted with low islands and sandbanks. We were often on tracks beside the river, but after we crossed to the right bank, where the land was as flat as a board, we sometimes followed roads on top of the levee bank, for lack of any other way.
After one day of pleasant fine weather, we were overtaken by violent storms and masses of rain, which made walking quite arduous and even frightening. By the time we got to our finishing point at St-Mathurin, calm had returned, but we no longer cared. That night we stayed in a hotel in the elegant centre of Tours to celebrate the end of the adventure.
