After Tournus we spent five easy days strolling beside the Saône, and once again the camping grounds were uniformly lovely, as were our evening meals. The hot weather continued and we suffered from the treelessness of the river bank in many places
The Château de l’Epervière allowed us to experience eighteenth-century aristocratic elegance, while at the same time sleeping rough on the ground. At Châlon-sur-Saône we were awestruck by the great white cathedral, and charmed with the old streets full of restaurants. Verdun-sur-le-Doubs and Seurre were normal riverside villages, where we ate amongst the locals and slept on the riverbank.
St-Jean-de-Losne marked the end of our affair with the Saône, as it was here that the Canal de Bourgogne began its long passage towards the north, which we were to follow for the next few days.
