Gorges of the Tarn

This classic walk started in the lovely town of Florac, in the Cévennes, and followed the river Tarn as it descended the westward-sloping causse in a deeply inscribed gorge. All down the gorge there were villages, either thriving tourist destinations, on the road side, or quiet, poignant relics of the past, on the other.

Traditionally most of the traffic was by boat, but there was also a well-made foot-track, which serves now as the walking path,with its own distinctive yellow-and-green signposts. Beyond Le Rozier the track became a small, quiet road and the gorge opened out into a wide valley as it approached Millau.
