A week of river-walking on the Vézère and Dordogne rivers from Terrasson to Lalinde.
The area is full of delights, not least of which is the evidence of prehistoric civilisation that is to be seen all around. Those prehistoric people knew what they were doing, settling in this area, with its rich forests, abundant rivers and mild climate. Nowadays there are also mediaeval villages, fortified churches and extra attractions of the gastronomic kind.
This was part of a longer walk that we did in 2005. We did it after a particularly gruelling three weeks in western France, which may explain why we had so many rest days on this expedition.
Getting to Terrasson-Lavilledieu
A local train (TER) runs regularly between Brive-la-Gaillarde and Périgueux that stops at Terrasson-Lavilledieu. Mainline SNCF trains run to both of these stations from Gare d’Austerlitz in Paris.
