In this section we left the region of Centre, that we had been in since we began walking, and entered Limousin, although we noticed little change in the landscape — rich, undulating farmland full of summer crops. We reached the deep valley of the river Creuse at Gargilesse, and left it at Crozant to follow a tributary to the town of la Souterraine. Beyond that, the track rose to the heights of Bénévent-l’Abbaye.
Meanwhile, the weather continued its unseasonal onslaught. We were constantly putting on our rain capes, and wet feet made our blisters worse and worse. The low point was camping at la Souterraine in driving rain, too crippled to go on, with nothing but some scraps of lunch food for our evening meal. The following night in a hotel was all the more appreciated after that.
