After visiting the Pont du Gard in the silence of early morning, we crossed the Gardon and picked up the GR6 again, following it upstream as far as Collias. Beyond that, we were obliged to diverge from the river, for lack of accommodation along the way.
We took a thread of a road to Uzès, then another, slightly less thread-like, across the flat land to cross the river again at Maussac and spend the night in a nearby hotel. The third day was also largely on tiny roads, taking us over a wooded rise to rejoin the Gardon at Cardet. Here we resumed our acquaintance with the GR6 with mixed success, following the river past Anduze and up into the foothills of the Cévennes at Saint-Jean-du-Gard.
